Fall has settled in on the Green River, and while the scenery is stunning with the canyon leaves turning, the fishing has been on the tougher side. Daily flow swings tied to reservoir management have made conditions less than ideal, and the lower C Section has been running dirty thanks to Red Creek — worth avoiding until that clears up.
Small BWOs (Pseudocleons) are hatching daily around late morning — on cloudy days these are your best bet, especially in the upper A Section where fish are stacking in slow back eddies. On warmer, sunnier days terrestrials are still producing in the B Section and on the upper water. A handful of caddis are also showing on the lower A Section.

The Greendale gauge sits just below Flaming Gorge Dam at the head of the Dutch John / Red Canyon tailwater — Sections A, B, and C down to Little Hole, the canyon water known for big trout. It carries both flow and water temperature, so the conditions reflect the tailwater anglers actually fish.

The Green River below Flaming Gorge Dam is a clear, cold tailwater flowing through dramatic red-rock country in northeastern Utah. It is divided into the A, B and C sections. The A section below the dam has the highest trout density and easiest trail access; B is more remote and often floated as an overnight trip; C is less consistent but offers solitude and larger-river character. Brown and rainbow trout predominate, with cuttbows and occasional cutthroat trout and whitefish. Fishing is available year-round, although dam releases strongly influence tactics and access. Midges and blue-winged olives provide important cool-season fishing, followed by caddis and PMDs. Cicadas, ants, beetles and crickets can create memorable summer dry-fly action. Sight-fishing dry flies and dry-dropper rigs is popular in clear water, while small nymphs remain dependable. Streamers imitate abundant sculpins and can move larger trout, especially early, late or under clouds. Boats are the most efficient way to cover the river, but the A-section trail offers substantial walk-and-wade access.
