The Roaring Fork is running clear right now, and all previous closures on the river have been lifted — the whole stretch from Aspen down through Basalt is open and fishable. Water levels above Basalt are on the low side, though there's considerably more volume once you get below Basalt. Overall conditions are solid, rating around a 7 out of 10 for late summer.
Caddis and Pale Morning Duns are the bugs to focus on right now. Expect the usual late-summer dry fly opportunities when conditions line up, and keep an eye out for afternoon activity.

The Glenwood Springs gauge sits at the mouth of the Roaring Fork, below the Aspen-to-Carbondale float and wade water that draws anglers all season. It reports both flow and water temperature, so the read reflects the volume and warmth of the whole river as it finishes its run to the Colorado.

Fast Colorado freestone flowing from high country through Basalt and Glenwood Springs, with pocket water and productive lower reaches. Target species include Rainbow, brown, cutthroat and whitefish. Good public access, though floating becomes the efficient method on larger lower sections. Productive timing is Spring before runoff, July through fall, and selected winter reaches. Major hatches and foods include Caddis, BWOs, PMDs, green drakes, golden stones and midges. Common approaches are Dry-dropper and nymph rigs dominate; streamers work well during runoff edges and fall.
