The Metolius is fishing well right now, and the timing couldn't be better — early fall is widely considered the best stretch of the year on this river. Redband trout, mountain whitefish, and bull trout are all active, and the fish are healthy and abundant throughout the system. It's catch-and-release only, fly fishing only, so come prepared for a technical experience on clear, cold spring-creek water.
Hatches are ramping up fast heading into September. Expect pale morning duns, blue-wing olives, mahogany duns, caddis in multiple sizes, golden stoneflies, and the beginning of green drakes — it's a genuinely prolific lineup for the next several weeks. Callibaetis are also worth watching near the surface around midday, and terrestrials like ants and beetles have been producing consistently.
