The North Umpqua is in a transitional moment right now — steelhead season is ramping back up after a slow fall stretch, and the lower river is fishing well for trout with some solid hatches going. Parts of the upper river are currently closed to steelhead, but the lower reach is in good shape with decent stream levels. Blue-winged olives and October caddis are the bugs to have on hand.
Trout are the main draw on the lower river at the moment, with some very nice fish being reported. Winter steelhead are expected to start showing up soon — the fish should be moving in before long, so now is a good time to get your gear dialed in. Swinging streamers and nymphing have both been productive methods when steelhead are present.

The Winchester gauge reads the North Umpqua on the mainstem near Roseburg, downstream of the legendary fly-only summer-steelhead water above Glide. It carries both flow and water temperature, so it reflects the river's volume and warmth — the steelhead water upstream rises and falls with the same flows this gauge tracks.
